Sherlock Holmes by Melusaaste Sherlock Holmes by Melusaaste
Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes.
He had this weird furry thing under his head in the reference picture but I couldn't handle any more furryness after painting his beard so I changed it.
I used Photoshop Elements and a mouse.

Notice that when I draw, I do the sketch with pencils and since I don't have a scanner, I have to take the picture with my camera. Then I continue working with photoshop. So that's why there's the camera data showing on the side of my deviations.

As a HUGE fan of both hyperrealism and Robert Downy Jr, this image speaks volumes to me. After scrutinising the picture, I am left stunned by the amount of sheer care and detail that the artist has put into this image- even down to the tiny details of the fabric pillow.

The expression on Downey Jr's face is captured magnificently, and though his eyes are so deep, the viewer's attention is still brought straight towards them.

The work that's gone into the lines and creases of his face, each single hair and the cut on the lip- is remarkable and trully inspiring- and the lighting and depth of colour create the perfect moment. If you haven't seen the film 'Sherlock Holmes'; this image is enough to make you rush out to buy it!

:iconverve-soliloquy:
It's unbelievable. Unthinkable. Utterly inconceivable!

Try as I might, to give you a fair critique, I am incapable of finding a single flaw in this image.

And I have never seen that before.

They say there is no such thing as perfection, but you have broken that mold. And you've done it with the tool most of us berate- a simple mouse! It just goes to show that its not the tools- its the artist that makes the work as beautiful as it can be.

I wish I could critique you, to give you the ability to improve even further, but I'm finding it completely impossible. And so, I hope, with these words of praise, you will continue to create such phenomenal work and share it with the masses! Congratulations on being one of the greatest painters to ever live.

This question might sound stupid....
But do you use any blending tools for shading or just use brush and try to blend the colors via color pick !? Damn that hyper realism in your drawings make me wanna jump off the cliff !!
Working on such minute details is simply amazing and your drawings make it look so natural !!

Oh and how do you work on wrinkles !? I mean what is the procedure of your shading !?

is reference needed in all photo-realistic art or can it be done from the imagination?

I need a reference, but I'm sure creating realism from imagination is possible if you study enough photographs and understand lightning and other stuff. :) I wish I could do it, maybe some day.

Dear Melusaaste,

Sorry to trouble you.

I am 38, an Assistant Professor in the field of Fashion Technology, working in India.

Right from chldhood I was interested in Oil Painting.
After seeing your digital art / paintings, I am fully mesmerized, and now I also would like to learn how to create drawings and paintings using computer and mobile  software.

I have seen many digital paintings on Internet created by using programs like Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Corel Painter, Corel Draw, Sketchbook Pro, etc.
I have done oil paintings of huge sizes like 1mx2m, 2mx3m, etc.

I am confused about which software should I learn.

I would like to know from yourgoodself which software provides best tools to create Realistic Paintings, that too with a Huge Canvas Size without compromising the quality. I want to take digital print of the painting at the end.

Thanking you with warm regards,

Vaibhav K Dhange

I read your intro again correctly, I do
appoligize.There was no scanner
& the pencil drawing was photographed.
 OUTSTANDING ,a remarkable
piece of art for viewing.I guess I was
mystified & couldn't justify my own words,
but I now justify your expertise for digital
painting technique.Thanks again for sharing.
